Buying built-in appliances: the basics

Most people buy built-in and integrated appliances to give their kitchens a sleek, streamlined look, with kitchen cabinetry uninterrupted by unsightly appliances protruding beyond the units. If you are someone who likes your kitchen to look neat, tidy and organized, built-in appliances are going to appeal. Installing built-in appliances into a smaller kitchens, which can often be dominated by freestanding appliances, can make a real difference to the look and feel of the space.

Built-in vs fully integrated

A built-in appliance is fixed to a unit and often boxed in at the top and sides, sometimes under a worktop. The front of the appliance will be visible but it should sit flush to the rest of the units, preserving the sleek look. An integrated appliance also sits within a unit but is concealed behind a door panel and the front of the appliance is hidden.

Built in appliances can vary in size and over the years there have been a few odd sized products available to buy. It is always worth checking the dimensions of an existing appliance ensuring the correct height, width & depth. This can be tricky to do and at Knees we offer a site survey locally to make sure you get the ideal product for your needs. Always bear in mind that built in appliances can also be limited in capacity for internal size and load. For example washing machines often only go to a maximum of a 9kg load.

The layout of your kitchen will dictate whether installation is complicated or straightforward. Always get advice from an electrician or gas engineer, or by using our site survey service. Built in appliances can give you greater flexibility in terms of position and power sources but if they are a replacement product seeking advice on the correct product is key to make this problem free. Built In fridge freezers have different styles of hinges, Pipework can run behind built in ovens, are you aware what is behind your existing appliance? Built In washing machines that have a door on the front often have hinge assembles in different places meaning that the cupboard door may not fit onto a different branded appliance. There are many pitfalls that we can help you to overcome, especially as once installed built-in appliances can be tricky to move or change.  We offer expert advice either by telephone or in store. Contact us if you have a query that you need help with.

Appliance technology is always changing and improving. Some of these changes can make a huge difference and are worth finding out more about. Induction cooking is one example, this is becoming a more affordable and popular option. It’s incredibly fast, and highly controllable, making it energy efficient and giving you precise control over your cooking. What’s more, the smooth surface of the hob looks fabulous and is incredibly easy to clean. Smart appliances are also increasing in popularity and allow you to link your smart phone to help manage day to day chores. Read more on our blog detailing some of the best appliance developments recently launched. We keep up with the latest changes in technology and our trained staff can talk you through the benefits.
