Choosing the right vacuum cleaner for your home
Vacuum cleaner buyers guide
There are so many different types of vacuum cleaners available. How do you choose the right one for you? Here are some useful tips on how to choose the right one for you and your home.
A vacuum that works well in a larger home with lots of carpets may not be so good in a smaller flat with many hard floors. There are many different types with various features available, and we hope this guide will make this more clear for you.
Types of vacuum cleaners
There are four main types of vacuum cleaners; upright, cordless, or cylinder. Here’s a quick overview of the difference between the three.
A cordless vacuum is one without a cable. These are usually battery-powered and need charging on a regular basis, but it means you can zoom around the house without having to keep changing the plug socket when you run out of cord or moving the cord out of the way.
An upright hoover is easier to push around than a more traditional cylinder vacuum. These are usually more powerful and easier to store away.
A cylinder vacuum cleaner is great for smaller rooms and doesn’t need much storage space.
A handheld vacuum cleaner is great when you just want to quickly clean up a small area. If you’ve dropped something and want to pick it up quickly rather than getting a bigger vacuum cleaner out.
An important thing to think about when buying a vacuum cleaner is the floor type. Some vacuum cleaners are designed to work better on carpets whereas others work better on wooden flooring. If you have a mixture of both in your home you may want a vacuum that has a dusting brush as this will care for your flooring and keep it looking spotless.
Something to think about when purchasing a vacuum is if the noise of the hoover bothers you. Some of the quietest cylinders on the market are between 65 and 75 dB for reference.
If you have little storage for your vacuum, the size will be important. An upright vacuum slots into spaces well and in a tidy manner but if you prefer to hide your vacuum away in a cupboard a smaller cylinder vacuum may be better for you.
Some vacuums don’t cope too well with pet hair, so look out for a vacuum which can easily be taken apart so that they are easier to clean.
An ergonomic vacuum is designed to be more comfortable to use. It will have features like a more comfortable handle or foot controls to switch between surfaces more easily instead of having to bend down to change the controls.
You won’t miss anything with LED lights. These illuminate any dust or dirt, so it’s easier to see when cleaning.
Lots of cordless models nowadays, have a detachable compartment which transforms the appliance into a smaller handheld vacuum. This is great for getting into those difficult to reach spaces.
The weight of a vacuum can vary a lot. If you have lots of stairs in your house or struggle to carry heavier items, look out for a vacuum that is lighter in weight. If, like some people, you see vacuum cleaning as a bit of a work out then you might prefer a heavier model to help you burn those extra calories.
