Appliances are now more eco-friendly than ever and energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important to us. Not only will it reduce your carbon footprint but energy efficiency could also save you money.

On the 1st March, the way energy efficiency was shown changed into a new system. At first, it will only affect dishwashers, washing machines, washer-dryers, fridges and freezers, and wine storage, other appliances will remain the same for now.

Key Changes
The main changes to note across all product categories are:

  • QR Code – Which provides instant access to product information if scanned on a smartphone
  • New Energy Classes – A simple A-G energy classification system which used to be A+++ to D. If you want a more efficient energy rating, look for an appliance with a higher rating when you shop.
  • Simpler Consumption Usage – An easier way to understand energy consumption measurements. Some of the icons have changed slightly and there is also a new rating for noise in addition to the number of decibels.

How to compare the new system with the old?

In the old energy efficiency rating system an appliance with an A+++ rating would be more energy efficient than an appliance with just an A rating. But in the new system, an A+++ will more likely be a C or B rating. Any appliance with an A grade in the new system will be much more efficient than the current appliances which are rated with an  A+++.

See image above.
